I try to provide a first class personal service in cosmetic and general plastic surgery, based upon the traditional values of 24-hour availability, friendly sensible careful advice and a high skill level in the surgery.
I qualified as a doctor in 1970 and started training in plastic surgery in 1978 and so have thirty eight years experience in plastic surgery, with additional training in the fields of orthopaedics, neurosurgery, ENT and eye surgery. I have experience in all forms of cosmetic surgery and have carried out most of the modern techniques available today.
My practice is based upon the idea that a patient must be fully aware of the range of treatments available to deal with their problem. It is important that patients understand the risks and possible complications, as well as the benefits. I have written a large number of information sheets on most of the plastic surgery procedures that I do. I like patients to read these either before or soon after a consultation with me. This will then lead on to a second consultation and then to the appropriate operation or treatment.
I welcome patients who are referred by their own doctor, although I don’t insist upon a referral letter for the first consultation, provided the patient will allow me to contact their own GP if surgery is to be carried out. This is an important safety measure to protect both patient and surgeon and is insisted upon by the General Medical Council.
I operate on 1-2 days a week and consult on 2-3 days a week. Until I retired from the NHS in 2006 I was carrying out about a thousand operations a year, both in the NHS and private practice. This included the full range of cosmetic and general plastic surgery procedures, and so I have experience of doing a very large number (ie over a thousand) each of most of the common procedures such as breast enlargement and breast reduction, eyelid operations, tummy tucks etc.
I do a lot of medico-legal work and am conscious of the very high expectations of patients nowadays, and the potential shortcomings of plastic surgeons.
I therefore try to maintain a high standard of care in my own work and go out of my way to try and look after patients as well as possible.
